ARE YOU GETTING THE RIGHT HEALTH ADVICE? - Importance of Advocacy in Thyroid Disease

Updated: Sep 24

Picture this: after struggling with fatigue, weight gain, and depression, you meet with your doctor. You undergo blood work, maybe even meet with a specialist, and all this results in a new diagnosis: thyroid dysfunction. FINALLY, you’ve found the reason behind feeling so miserable. After taking medication for a few weeks, you don’t feel any better. You bring it up with your doctor, but when they recheck your levels, your TSH looks “fine,” so they move on.

The problem with this scenario? The thyroid is a highly complex organ, and one simple lab result only provides a small piece of the greater picture. But if you’re not familiar with thyroid health, you may not know there’s a need to dig deeper. And if thyroid problems are left unaddressed, they can lead to serious chronic health concerns.

At Vitality, we look at the whole picture when considering thyroid function. With multiple hormones at play, we dig into your bloodwork for an in-depth look at how your thyroid gland is functioning and what steps need to be taken to restore optimal function. But we also listen to you - how you’re feeling physically and emotionally, and what you need as an individual to feel your best.

This is why advocacy is SO important. It’s up to you to ask for more when you know something isn’t right. And if you don’t feel comfortable advocating for yourself, it makes a world of difference to have a knowledgeable friend, family member, or even a professional health advocate in your corner. They’re more than an extra set of ears - they’re an extension of you, and they can speak with and for you when you need more support.

In the following video, Dr. McRae goes into greater detail about why advocacy is so important when it comes to thyroid health. Follow the link to learn more.
