In our increasingly electronic world, it's more important than ever to be conscious of the products we put on our skin. Our phones and computers are covered in germs, so why would we put anything else on our bodies that aren't clean? In this guide, we'll discuss some of the safest and healthiest cosmetic options available to everyone, regardless of your lifestyle.
About the Healthy Living App by the EWG
The Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Healthy Living app is a great way to keep track of your daily environmental impact. The app allows you to input different data points like the type of transportation you use, the food you eat, and the products you use. It then calculates your Carbon Footprint and gives you tips on how to reduce it.
EWG believes in transparency. They make it easy for you to understand how your product or company stands against other similar ones, by providing a 1-10 score (with 1 being the best). You'll also find out what chemicals are found on their products and where those toxins come from.
This is a great tool that you can utilize when you go to the store to pull up and scan products and see how it is rated by the EWG. Once you start the app on your device, there is an option at the very bottom that allows you to scan the labels of products you wish to buy.
We put up a few items from our list to test with this app.
Schmidt's Natural Deodorant, Rose + Vanilla
This one came back as a 3. However, the fragrance was marked an 8, which is part of why it's not certified by the Environmental Working Group. Overall, it still rates better than some of the other options out there, but there are multiple scent options from this brand that rate lower, so you just need to do your research! They also have unscented versions available for those who want their deodorant without any added scents or chemicals.
Avalon Organics Lavender Nourishing Shampoo
Avalon Organics Lavender Nourishing Shampoo is a great choice for those looking for an EWG-certified product. Most of the ingredients are graded with a 1, which is the highest rating possible. The shampoo is made with organic lavender, which is known for its calming and relaxing properties. It also contains saw palmetto, which is an ingredient that is known to help with hair loss. The Avalon Organics Lavender Nourishing Shampoo is a great choice for those who are looking for a gentle and nourishing shampoo.
Beauty Counter Products
Beauty Counter products are highly recommended. Not only are their products Environmental Working Group certified, but they also follow European standards for eliminating toxic ingredients. Their shampoos and conditioners are consumer favorites.
Herbal Essences
This line of Herbal Essences shampoo is a surprise because it's rated 1 star by the Environmental Working Group. It only has one ingredient that can be questionable, but other than this little flaw in their rating system they came back clean! So if you want to stock your guest shower or need something quick and easy for guests who come over often then this product will work great.
Dr. Bronner's Pure Castille Soap
Dr. Bronner's Pure Castille Soap is a liquid soap that is certified by the EWG as having a rating of 1. This soap is made with organic ingredients and is free of synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and chemicals. It is also vegan and cruelty-free. This soap can be used for washing the body, hair, face, and hands. It is also safe for use in infants and children. This is available in several scents, including lavender, lemon, almond, eucalyptus, and peppermint.
Everyone Lotion, Unscented
This moisturizer is perfect for those who are looking for a product with no traces of ecotoxicology. The environmental working group has certified this moisturizer as well, so you can be sure that it is gentle on the environment.
They also make a kid's bath soap. Though they have unscented variants, lavender and orange-scented ones are available as well! Their environmental working group certification is proof that these products won't harm our planet.
Badger Active Mineral Sunscreen Cream
The Environmental Working Group rates this sunscreen as a 2, which is pretty good. However, the fine print says to avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Also, it is not clear if this sunscreen is water-resistant. The company website does not provide any additional information about the product. Overall, this sunscreen seems like a good choice for people who are looking for a natural option.
Some people want to apply their sunscreen with a physical barrier, such as zinc. These sunscreens may be too thick for some individuals and come in the form of an opaque white lotion which provides greater protection from UVA rays than most other options on today’s market. But they have a clear formulation version now.
Thinksport Kids Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50+
As a parent, you want only the best for your children. That's why you'll want to choose a sunscreen that is certified by the EWG as being safe and effective. The Thinksport Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ is a great choice for keeping your little ones safe from the sun's harmful rays. This sunscreen is made with 20% zinc oxide and provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
It is also water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, making it ideal for days spent at the beach or pool. Best of all, the Thinksport Kids Sunscreen Lotion is free of harmful chemicals and fragrances, so you can feel good about using it on your family.
Sophi and Lauren B Beauty
It's no secret that nail polish can be full of toxic chemicals. But with so many options on the market, it can be hard to find a safe and healthy nail polish that fits your needs. Luckily, there are a few brands that offer nail polish selections certified by the EWG. Sophi and Lauren B Beauty are two of these brands, and their nail polishes come in a variety of colors to suit your every need. So if you're looking for a safer and healthier option for your nails, be sure to check out Sophi and Lauren B Beauty.
Alaffia Unscented Shea Butter
If you're looking for an environmental working group certified, unrefined, pure shea butter, Alaffia Unscented Shea Butter is a clean choice. It's also non-GMO and sustainably sourced. And because it's unrefined, it hasn't been exposed to the high heat that can degrade some of the beneficial properties of shea butter. So if you're looking for a shea butter that's both environmentally friendly and gentle on your skin, this one is a good choice.
CermedX
If you're looking for a clean and effective moisturizing cream, then CermedX is worth considering. It's dermatologist recommended and EWG certified as 2, which means it's made with clean ingredients that are good for your skin. The cream itself is also very effective at moisturizing and keeping your skin soft and supple. Overall, CermedX is an excellent option if you're looking for a clean and effective skincare solution.
Tom's Of Maine Children’s Toothpaste
Tom's of Maine is a company that produces clean-ingredient personal care products, including toothpaste. This company has been in operation for over 40 years and its products are available for purchase in stores across the United States. Tom's of Maine offers both fluoride and fluoride-free toothpaste options for both adults and children.
The Children's Toothpaste is EWG certified and safe for kids to use. It is also available in both minty and fruit-flavored options. The fluoride-free version of the toothpaste is also safe for kids to use, and it is gentle on sensitive teeth. Overall, Tom's of Maine produces high-quality toothpaste that is safe for both adults and children to use.
It can be frustrating when you're trying to scan an item using the EWG Healthy Living App and it's not located in their system. If that's the case, then you have to plug in the ingredients one by one. However, if you're using clean ingredients that are EWG certified, then you can be confident that you're using products that are safe for you and your family. So even though it may take a little extra time to scan each ingredient individually, it's worth it in the end. Plus, you can always save the scanned product in your EWG app so you don't have to do it again next time.
