Good Health & Long Life: Immune System Habits That Significantly Improve Life

One of the pillars of the functional approach to wellness is to practice preventive medicine over reactionary medicine and supporting the immune system falls perfectly in line with this goal.

Your immune system is your body’s frontline of defense. It is your primary protection from illnesses and diseases but it also plays a part in helping you heal from injuries and surgeries. Simply put, a healthy and robust immune system is critical for good health and longevity

The Immune System’s Job

The immune system has a simple, yet complex mission. Its goal is to protect you. It protects against foreign enemies; like germs, bacteria, and viruses, and also protects in times of injury; everything from a splinter to a surgery. When your immune system is compromised and its defenses are low, it affects the body’s ability to fight. That’s the last thing we want.

Signs of a weakened immune system

Curious if you have a weakened immune system? Here are some telltale signs. Do you feel like you catch every illness of the season? Or have you said, “I just can't shake this cough”? Do you notice digestive problems such as bloating, gassiness, or abdominal pain? Do you find that you’re chronically tired and can’t seem to catch up on sleep? These are all signs of a weakened immune system.

Thankfully lifestyle changes can have a big impact on your immune system. You are the biggest controller of your body’s ability to fight off disease.

So what can we do about it?

Your body needs the following things from you

  1. Nutrients- a robust diet of whole foods

  2. Sleep - important processes happen only when we’re sleeping.

  3. Stress management - a whole cascade of issues crop up when we are constantly in a state of flight or fight.

  4. Movement - Did you know cytokines that calm your system down are released every time your muscles contract?
