Botox: Everything You Need To Know

Updated: Sep 21, 2021

Here at Vitality Natural Wellness and Medspa, we take a whole-body approach when it comes to your health and well-being. We also are happy to offer Botox and dermal fillers to our patients. Some of our patients want the low down on our Botox services, so we wanted to let you in on all the secrets and the basics.

What is Botox?

Botox is a medication that weakens and paralyzes muscles. In small doses, Botox can help reduce wrinkles in the skin and is also used to treat some medical conditions. Some medical conditions include eyelid spasms, excessive sweating, bladder disorders, and even migraines.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is a neurotoxin that targets the nervous system. It does this by disrupting the nerve signaling process that can stimulate muscle contraction. This is how once injected into your skin; it causes temporary muscle paralysis. Botox injections are used to prevent the release of acetylcholine, which in turn stops the muscles from contracting.

Botox Uses

The primary use of Botox injections is for reducing the appearance of wrinkles. The effects of injections are temporary and often last about 3-6 months, depending on the type of treatment you receive. It is common to get Botox injections between your eyebrows, around the eyes, creases in the forehead, lines at the corner of the mouth, and skin on the chin.

The Procedure

Before your procedure, you may ask the doctor to numb the area to reduce discomfort, but most patients feel minimal pain. Your provider uses a thin needle to inject tiny amounts of the botulinum toxin into your skin and muscles during the procedure. The number of Botox injections you will need depends on the extent of your problem. After the procedure, you can not rub or massage the treated area for 24 hours. This helps keep the toxin from spreading to different places.

Cost and Time

Botox's cost depends on whether it is for medical or cosmetic purposes, where you are getting the treatment, and the number of units we will be using. We would be more than happy to give you an estimate of the services before they are done. You can expect your procedure to take about 15-30 minutes again, depending on what needs to be done. You will begin to see results in 7-10 days. The downtime when it comes to Botox is zero, and you should be able to return to normal activities immediately following the procedure.

The Risks

As with any service, some risks are involved with Botox. Patients typically can tolerate the injections, and side effects are uncommon. Some side effects include:

  • dry eye

  • upset stomach

  • numbness

  • mild pain, swelling, and bruising

  • headache

  • temporary eyelid drooping

  • temporary weakness in muscles

  • double vision

We have listed some common side effects. If you are experiencing any of these or others, you should contact us immediately.

Botox is not for everyone. If you have a sensitivity or allergy, or infection at the injection site, you should not get injections. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we also advise you not to get Botox.
