Dealing With The Stress And Fatigue Of Post-COVID Life

It’s been nearly 3 years since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and many of us are feeling more stuck than ever in the constant whirlwind of stress and fatigue. If you’re also feeling this way, it’s likely you’ve been told to get more sleep, eat a better diet, or just make sure you’re exercising more - and that will solve the nagging feelings of tiredness.

The reality is, there may be much more going on beneath the surface and simply hitting the pillow earlier or adding in a walk or two will not fix it.

How do I know it’s more than just a little tiredness?

You can’t get very far into your day without coming in contact with the stress of the world around you. Food costs are up, the market is down, and weather emergencies seem to be everywhere. It can be hard to know if what you are feeling is ‘normal’ or a sign of something more.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you find yourself feeling overtired?

  • Are you struggling with low energy?

  • Do you have a strong desire to just rest?

Simply put, when exhaustion starts interfering with your life - it’s time to dig into the cause and find a long-term solution.

Fatigue as a symptom

As a functional medicine office, we look for the root cause of illness. So, when talking about fatigue, we want to remember that it’s a symptom and the goal isn’t to simply band-aid it and move on.

If we recommend drinking caffeine or taking a pill, you probably would have more energy - and fast; but we wouldn’t be doing what’s best for you. What’s best for long-term longevity is digging deep and finding the root cause.

Otherwise, you’ll have rebounds of fatigue that will continue to interfere with your ability to function at your best!

What are the common causes of fatigue?

  • High-stress levels

  • Lack of sleep

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Prolonged exertion or too much exercise

  • Thyroid health

  • Nutrient deficiencies

  • post-COVID

What can I do if I’m struggling with chronic fatigue?

Once you realize what you’re dealing with is much more than just a few sleepy days, you can quickly overwhelm yourself by using Dr. Google to self-treat. Next thing you know, you’re buying a new mattress that promises to get you into a deeper sleep faster, you’re wearing a tracker to see exactly what happens when your eyes are closed, and you’re cutting major food groups from your diet.

Now, some of those things may be helpful for long-term health - but trust us when we say, we have a better way. Instead, watch this video - where Dr. McRae dives into what’s happening inside the body when we’re struggling with fatigue.
