Finding the Root Cause

“Watching patients develop a commitment to their health and wellness inspires me—and I love that I can be with them every step of the way.”

Tracie Bakewell, CNP

I first came across functional medicine in graduate school, and the philosophy behind the science just clicked for me. Around this time I also met Dr. McRae and I was so inspired by her commitment to helping her patients identify the root cause of their symptoms. She’s an amazing person and a brilliant doctor. I’m so glad that I get to work alongside her and all the other amazing care providers at Vitality!

As a nurse practitioner, I strongly believe that patient education is one of the most important parts of my job. Traditional medicine teaches us more about disease than about health. It’s very reactive; we’re taught to fix problems with a pill or procedure after they occur and we often forget the importance of preventative care. Vitality’s personalized care approach and one-to-one consults give me the time to teach my patients how to be proactive in maintaining their health.

In a typical day, I get to consult new medical patients, follow-up with existing medical patients, and perform aesthetic services, too. Meeting with new medical patients is one of the best parts of my job. I get to do a lot of education and I get to play detective to figure out what’s causing their symptoms. New patients bring so much enthusiasm and excitement to the office. They’re ready to restart their life, and I’m ready to do it with them. I understand that healthcare visits can sometimes feel overwhelming, so I like to give my patients a copy of their care plan to take home with them. I tell them to read through it, take their time to process, and write down any questions that they have. I want them to feel confident and informed, and I want them to know that I’m here to support them.

I also enjoy following-up with patients. In those meetings, we often do a lot of troubleshooting and fine-tuning. I’m always so honored that my patients trust me and allow me to be a part of their care. Watching patients develop a commitment to their health and wellness inspires me—and I love that I can be with them every step of the way. Often times, optimal wellness is not something that can be gauged objectively. When I see the smiles on my patient’s faces, when they tell me that they finally feel like themselves again, that’s how I know we are succeeding.

While I spend most of my time on the medical side of the office, I enjoy working with the aesthetic services, too! I want to help people look as good on the outside as they feel on the inside. One of my favorite things to do is enhance lips—people often feel encouraged to smile more afterwards! I also appreciate how many natural therapies we offer. For example, microneedling evokes an immediate response and helps stimulate your body’s own collagen, smoothing out wrinkles and lines.

The best part about Vitality is that we have a wide variety of options for diverse patients. No matter how old you are, what your background is, or what stage of health you’re in, we can help you.
