Building a treatment plan with you, not at you.
“I know my patients are grateful for my time and attention. Developing a relationship built on trust is so important. I think healthcare is most effective when I develop treatment plans with my patients instead of at them.”
Tonia Dunnigan, CNP
At Vitality, I love that I am able to combine medical care with aesthetic services because I strongly believe that your health and wellness are impacted by how you feel internally and externally. I also enjoy how much time I get to spend with patients—getting to know them and helping them listen to their bodies.
I began my nursing career in emergency medicine. During that time I saw a lot of patients that were dealing with both chronic and acute issues. I noticed that many patients lacked guidance and follow through on how to live healthier lifestyles, but in an emergency setting, there is limited time for teaching and for patient learning.
Now that I practice functional medicine, I am able to spend time learning my patient’s stories and understanding the stressors in their lives. I’m thinking about everything from what’s happening in their lives now, to what they went through growing up, to what’s happening in their bodies on a cellular level. And I know my patients are grateful for my time and attention. Developing a relationship built on trust is so important. I think healthcare is most effective when I develop treatment plans with my patients instead of at them.
The human body is truly amazing. Functional medicine works on enhancing your body’s balance, finding natural, long-term plans to improve your health and wellness. For example, one of my favorite medical therapies is our Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). Our hormones are important messengers and using BHRT helps them perform their functions in a more efficient manner. It’s wonderful to see people begin to react to this therapy; it increases the quality of life physically, mentally, emotionally, and more. It’s all about healing the whole person.
Many of our aesthetic services work with the body’s natural functions, too. For example, Sculptra allows your body’s own collagen to start filling in volume loss with time. It’s a natural way of bringing back a youthful look. It’s one of my favorite services to provide.
At Vitality one of our core philosophies is healing from the outside in and inside out. I love this idea because we each have different motivations for improving ourselves. I’ve learned that sometimes it takes feeling good on the outside to want to take care of yourself on the inside, too. I often have patients that come in for aesthetic services like Botox or Dermal Fillers first, and then they’ll start talking to me about how they feel bloated or experience recurring headaches and then they’ll become medical patients, too.
It’s wonderful to be a part of both the aesthetic and medical side of Vitality, and to see patients benefit from both!
